The Radiologic Technology associate degree is designed to prepare graduates to practice radiography in the ever changing health care environment. The program provides students with both the general academic and technical foundations necessary to competently perform a wide range of radiologic procedures. Upon completion of the program requirements, the student may be qualified to take the national certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT). Those who successfully pass the examination are issued certificates which confer the right to use the title "Registered Technologist" and the abbreviation "R.T. (ARRT)" after their names.
Radiographers work closely with physicians in hospitals, clinics, doctors' offices, and mobile radiography units to assist in diagnosing disease and injuries. They operate a variety of computerized imaging equipment. A radiographer must exercise initiative and independent judgment in the performance of x-ray examinations. With additional preparation and education, radiographers are offered advancement opportunities in areas such as Mammography, Computerized Tomography, Magnetic Resonance, Sonography, Nuclear Medicine, Management, Supervision and/or Education, and Research. The salary range nationwide for a radiologic technologist is $15 - $33 per hour.
The Radiologic Technology program at Technical College of the Lowcountry is accredited by the Joint Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology, and consists of general education courses, science, and radiologic technology courses taught in the college classroom, on-campus laboratories, and multiple clinical education sites throughout the four county area served by the college. The program consists of six semesters to complete before the student is awarded a Associate Degree in Health Sciences/Radiologic Technology.
Student applicants interested in the Radiologic Technology program must first complete the college admission application process. The student will then make an appointment with a Health Science advisor. Acceptance into the college does not guarantee admission in the Radiologic Technology program. Applications specific to the Radiologic Technology program may only be obtained from the Health Science department at TCL.
